SUMMARY:Art of Improvisation
DESCRIPTION:August 2 – 7\, 2015\n$100 – $475\nFredonia\, New York. \nArt of Improvisation is for musicians and vocalists experienced in any musical tradition\, including classical\, jazz\, theater\, rock\, ethnic\, avant-garde\, etc.; and all instruments including acoustic\, electric\, ethnic drums and percussion\, and even homemade. In an energetic\, humorous and open-minded environment\, discover how to move beyond the inhibitions of musical training while playing at the peak of your technical and expressive ability in your preferred musical style. We are fundamentally about YOUR music\, privately and publicly\, and supporting YOU in your musical explorations through sessions where you experience improvisational music. Prior experience in improvisation is not necessary\, as this workshop is based on the concept that there are no “wrong notes.” This in-depth workshop is intensive\, yet always fun and rewarding. \nThrough a supportive humanistic approach\, our intention is to promote authentic music making through creating music “in the moment” and playing through the heart. Our simple yet profound structures help to guide you toward your own music. There will be experiences in playing with others in small and large group ensembles\, as well as creating powerful solos. The AOI workshop includes free time for jamming\, as well as impromptu sharings\, providing participants with the opportunity to improvise in front of each other while their improvisations are professionally recorded. \nThe activities\, structures and tools are designed to benefit you both personally and professionally. In addition to energizing your music composition\, performance\, and play\, this creative body of work adapts beautifully to those of you working in the areas of health and wellness\, music therapy\, education\, and community building. Free Improvisation opens doors of creativity for both performers and teachers. This workshop will inspire teachers to take Improvisation\, one of the National Educational Standards\, into their classrooms as well as provide practical  skills that can be adapted for many populations for music therapists. CEU credits are available for music therapists\, dance therapists and Board Certified counselors. \nThe Music for People faculty join forces in this unique approach to music improvisation\, using techniques drawn from around the world – from Bach to Boogie-Woogie and Brazilian to BeBop. The faculty will experientially demonstrate improvisation skills that will be explored throughout the week. It is experiential education in action\, which makes for the most engaging trainings possible. Faculty member  Dr. David Rudge\, violinist\, conductor\, SUNY faculty and instructor for the Improv Collective will be a providing his expertise in improvisation skills\, improvising classical music and conducting improvisational music. Additionally faculty members\, Lynn Miller\, music therapist and author of SpiritArts\, will offer unique sessions specifically designed for vocalists. Dr. Jim Oshinsky\, author of Return to Child  and Mary Knysh\, author of Innovative Drum Circles\, will offer a Leading Lab which gives participants the opportunity to develop and practice group facilitation skills. Members from the Music for People Leadership training program will be leading in-depth explorations of  MFP improvisation skills. \nRent -a-Studio with Dr. Eric Miller. Rent-a-Studio is the time for your pet project\, special jam or personal exploration.  Use this opportunity to record with others or go solo.  We’ll mic you up\, give some verb and let you soar!  A Grand Piano will be available. CD is included in the fee\, which benefits the MfP organization. $40./half hr. \nAccommodations Located in beautiful Chautauqua County\, Fredonia State University of NY is the westernmost campus in the SUNY system. DESCRIPTION:The Flute Haven Native Flute School is an intensive workshop for people who play (or wish to play) the Native American Flute. It is a chance to deepen our experience with our music in general\, and Native Flutes in particular. \nFlute players with all levels of experience are welcome! We encourage the sounds of all players in a supportive and non-critical environment. \nWorkshop sessions throughout the Native Flute School focus on building confidence playing the flute in many settings and styles and expressing your inner voice. DESCRIPTION:The voice is a very powerful instrument\, it comes directly from and through our bodies which creates an intimacy with self\, others and spirit. Improvising is meeting the moment\, where spirit lives. Discover how the principles of creating from within are similar to the principles of basic spirituality. Through these principles we will discover soul language. Soul Language is a non-verbal communication that comes from a clear part of our being which is an expression from our soul. It is a Universal language for it speaks to all souls. \nLynn Miller will sing with the Indian shruti box and a hybrid instrument combining the Tamboura and Mandal Swar in soul language. She believes we all carry these ancient voices and languages inside for they are encoded in our cells. All cultures make the same sounds as babies. Once we learn to talk\, we forget this elemental common language. Most of us have forgotten that we ever knew\, it is only a matter of tapping into them. In this fun interactive concert/workshop participants will explore and discover soul language through simple exercises. No previous experience in singing is necessary.

SUMMARY:Bio-Guided Music Therapy workshop
DESCRIPTION: Bio-Guided Music therapy\nMusic is the language of the soul. Communication skills will be demonstrated through music making and connecting with a deeper part of self (soul) and with others. While hooked up to biofeedback equipment\, musical tones will be generated through a participant’s physiology. Other group members will have the opportunity to “jam” with these tones and witness the impact on stress measures.  \n  \nDuring the weekend participants will gain hands-on experience in creating musical environments based on real-time physiological output of muscle tension\, heart-rate\, skin conductance and EEG brainwaves. \nDemonstrations with music therapy interventions of singing\, drumming and guided imagery combined with physiological data will show how one can gain greater awareness of physiological functions and how thoughts may affect physiology.

DESCRIPTION:Improv Orchestra\nTwenty piece orchestra creates music in the moment\nIrma Hammond tells the story of the Phoenix\n30 foot Phoenix is burned in town to represent transformation-life/death myth \nColonial Theatre 227 Bridge Street\n6-7pm 	Storytelling Irma\, known for her interactive storytelling style\, tells the Phoenix myth. She is accompanied by the Firebird Improv Orchestra – a group of eclectic musicians and instruments from didgeridoos to violins. All of the musical compositions are created in the moment. Each piece will have a different conductor creating an entirely different flavor for each composition.\nThis show is interactive\, spontaneous and fun for all ages.
