SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Music and Healing
DESCRIPTION:With Music therapists\, Eric and Lynn Miller and Yuri Yamamoto \nThe arts have been used as a healing tool since ancient times. Arts rituals were experienced communally; used as a container and structure for facing fears\, doubts\, suffering as well as for celebration and connection with something greater than self. Today\, music is being used therapeutically worldwide in hospitals\, institutions and for self-healing and spiritual connection. Latest research shows that the arts are a means for long-term neuro-cognitive change. \nIn this workshop\, we will combine community music making\, neuroscience information and biofeedback experiences to explore: \n\nHow to play music for fun\, health and well-being\nHow the mind alone can influence physiology (importance of thoughts for healing).\nHow to use the power of the voice for healing (neurological developments on voice and healing)\nBrain jamming\, with biofeedback\n\nThrough a fun humanistic approach\, participants will develop skills in creating music “in the moment”\, through Improvisational (Mindfullness) techniques. Mindfulness is non-judgmental moment- to -moment attention to what is happening\, which creates presence. Being present\, changes perspectives from negating thoughts to well-being. These skills will be explored using movement\, voice and instruments. Therapeutic effects of music created through Mindfullness techniques include: \n\nCreative self-expression\nStress Reduction\nEnhanced Spiritual connection\nEmotional expression\nConnection with others – team building – collaboration\nIncreased Spontaneity and Resilience (generalizes to other situations)\nSelf-Realization\, connection with deeper part of self\n\nEvidenced based studies and experiential understanding will demonstrate how our physiology changes from stress to relaxation and our mind changes from fear to inspiration through Music and Mindfullness. \nThis workshop does not require any previous experience in creating music. \nLynn Miller and Yuri Yamamoto\, vocalists\, will have you singing from your soul. Lynn (guitarist) and Yuri (pianist) will accompany you and demonstrate simple accompaniment skills. Eric Miller will have you jamming and grooving. He plays the guitar and mandolin. Bring an instrument and/or your voice. We will have some easy to play world instruments to share.

SUMMARY:Music for Healing and Transition Conference
DESCRIPTION:The  Heart-Centered  Musician:  Navigating  the  Tides  of  Healthcare\nJuly 14-17 at the Presentation Center in Los Gatos\, California.\nThursday Evening – July 14\nThe Thursday evening keynote presentation\,\nSpiritArts: Transformation Through Improvisation\, will be presented by Lynn Miller and Eric Miller\, Ph.D.\, two music therapists with a broad range of experience. Improvisation entails deep listening to the sounds of our voices or instruments and being guided by the sound\, which helps take us out of our thinking mind or “the critic” that often impedes our process. When we are present with the music\, we go into a “flow state.” The Millers will provide tools to help facilitate music from the inside out\, including techniques from SpiritArts and Music for People (MFP). Bring your voice or instrument for this experiential workshop.\nLynn Miller is the author of SpiritArts\, Transformation Through Creating Art\, Music\, and Movement\, which is a culmination of her experience in arts and healing. She is on the faculty for Music for People\, an international improvisational music training program founded by Grammy award-winning cellist\, David Darling. Lynn is also on the staff for Flute Haven Native Flute School\, a humanistic educational approach to developing Native flute skills. In an energetic\, humorous and open-minded environment\, discover how to move beyond the inhibitions of musical training while playing at the peak of your technical and expressive ability in your preferred musical style. We are fundamentally about YOUR music\, privately and publicly\, and supporting YOU in your musical explorations through sessions where you experience improvisational music. Prior experience in improvisation is not necessary\, as this workshop is based on the concept that there are no “wrong notes.” This in-depth workshop is intensive\, yet always fun and rewarding. \nThrough a supportive humanistic approach\, our intention is to promote authentic music making through creating music “in the moment” and playing through the heart. Our simple yet profound structures help to guide you toward your own music. There will be experiences in playing with others in small and large group ensembles\, as well as creating powerful solos. The AOI workshop includes free time for jamming\, as well as impromptu sharings\, providing participants with the opportunity to improvise in front of each other while their improvisations are professionally recorded. \nThe activities\, structures and tools are designed to benefit you both personally and professionally. In addition to energizing your music composition\, performance\, and play\, this creative body of work adapts beautifully to those of you working in the areas of health and wellness\, music therapy\, education\, and community building. Free Improvisation opens doors of creativity for both performers and teachers. This workshop will inspire teachers to take Improvisation\, one of the National Educational Standards\, into their classrooms as well as provide practical  skills that can be adapted for many populations for music therapists. CEU credits are available for music therapists\, dance therapists and Board Certified counselors. \nThe Music for People faculty join forces in this unique approach to music improvisation\, using techniques drawn from around the world – from Bach to Boogie-Woogie and Brazilian to BeBop. The faculty will experientially demonstrate improvisation skills that will be explored throughout the week. It is experiential education in action\, which makes for the most engaging trainings possible. Faculty member  Dr. David Rudge\, violinist\, conductor\, SUNY faculty and instructor for the Improv Collective will be a providing his expertise in improvisation skills\, improvising classical music and conducting improvisational music. Additionally faculty members\, Lynn Miller\, music therapist and author of SpiritArts\, will offer unique sessions specifically designed for vocalists. Dr. Jim Oshinsky\, author of Return to Child  and Mary Knysh\, author of Innovative Drum Circles\, will offer a Leading Lab which gives participants the opportunity to develop and practice group facilitation skills. Members from the Music for People Leadership training program will be leading in-depth explorations of  MFP improvisation skills. \nRent -a-Studio with Dr. Eric Miller. Rent-a-Studio is the time for your pet project\, special jam or personal exploration.  Use this opportunity to record with others or go solo.  We’ll mic you up\, give some verb and let you soar!  A Grand Piano will be available. CD is included in the fee\, which benefits the MfP organization. $40./half hr. \nAccommodations Located in beautiful Chautauqua County\, Fredonia State University of NY is the westernmost campus in the SUNY system.
